What the numbers mean

Hex encodes red, green, and blue light as three pairs of hexadecimal digits. CMYK describes how much cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink covers the paper, each from 0 to 100 percent.

  • RGB is additive: the screen emits light, and more of every channel moves toward white.
  • CMYK is subtractive: ink absorbs light reflected off paper, and more of every ink moves toward a muddy dark.
  • The K channel exists because cyan, magenta, and yellow together give a weak brown rather than a clean black.
  • The two gamuts overlap but do not match, so some colors have no honest CMYK equivalent.

Why does my bright blue look dull once it is printed?

CMYK percentages are rounded to whole numbers, so precision is lost. The round-trip readout shows that drift, usually one step per channel. It is rounding, not an error.
